Erwin Lim, Grand Prize Sinulog 2008 Photo Contest Winner
Everything is a numbers game! 7,000 entries, 647 photographers, 1 grand prize winner (and a multi-awarded Cebuano photographer who won 14 entries, pocketed at least P67,000 in total cash prizes, in yesterday’s awarding ceremonies at the SM City Cebu Entertainment Plaza).
Cebuasia gets to interview Erwin Lim, a dentist, and Mikhail Arrogante — these year’s top winners to the Sinulog 2008 photo contest.

Here’s the interview excerpts of my upclose and personal with them.
On Dr. Erwin Lim
CebuAsia: What lens did you use?
Lim: A Nikon 18-200mm VR.
CebuAsia: What time did you shoot this winning picture?
Lim: It was a morning mass.
CebuAsia: So tell us more about it.
Lim: I was just lucky. Every year I wouldn’t miss shooting the foot procession at the Basilica. I saw most of the photographers shooting the passing Santo Niño. Then, somewhere, opposite its direction, I saw this boy crying while huddling to her lola and the woman behind them raising the Santo Niño, wiping her tears with a handkerchief. I took a series of ladder shot. I noticed, however, that the other photographers were so engaged with the other subjects. I quickly settled down and said, “I think this is it!”
On Mikhail Arrogante (Multi-awarded Cebuano Photographer)
CebuAsia: You won a lot! What made you win? What are your winning secrets?
Arrogante: Sayun nalang kaayu nako karong tuiga, dili pareho sauna. (This year was so easy for me, unlike the other year). I knew what the judges wanted to see in the pictures. So I gave them these elements, colors, and the emotions… Take for instance, Erwin’s crying subjects, the Santo Niño, the whole thing. You really have to define what Sinulog is all about in your images.
