Cebu City will once again become a mecca of pilgrims, foreigners, tourists, photographers and celebrities as the Sinulog (see complete schedule of activities) kicks off this Friday, January 11. But a bulk of interesting human species, the politicos, will join in the festivities.

Two years into the next Philippine presidential election, by 2010, isn’t far to grab privileged limelights in the grand Sinulog stage, and these presidentiables — themselves celebrities in their own rights — would exploit their “pogi points” for an empathy vote.

This is one peculiar country of artista-want-to-be-damn-presidents. And if a politician is invited to a locale’s fiesta, it spells two drop-dread boring things: tiring speeches about who-else-but-vote-for-me-and-only-me and be the judges of pageant shows. We will all pray to the gods and the santos-es that their mirage will not mar the importance of this event’s religious and cultural significance. We hope that they will also pay attention (and do something!) to the dilapidated streets and the putrid stench of poverty in this country.

Again, this is one peculiar country — to die for.
