Detailed independent travel guide to Cebu’s inside out | Philippine Travel Destination Gateway
Cebu dazzles!
Pomp and pageantry, honor and devotion, loud drums and costumes brandished in fantastic colors… all resounding to the beat of this addictive, tribal prayer-and-ritual dance!
(With a perpetual/universal theme, “One Beat, One Dance, One Vision.”). Believed to be the “mother of all Philippine Festivals,” the Sinulog honors the miraculous holy infant, Jesus — the Santo Niño. Every devout Catholic wouldn’t miss this chance for a pilgrimage at the Shrine of the Basilica del Sto. Niño, located along the oldest street of the Philippines, in Colon (and named after the Italian voyager, Christopher Columbus — a.k.a Cristobal Colon) . The street was built by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s men during his time (circa 1572).This grand festival is held every year, every third Sunday of January. It started in this southern island province of the Philippines.
A colorful and spectacular event awaits the curious tourist and the familiar stranger who will soon witness the Sinulog (to ebb or flow, “sulog” in the vernacular) in remembrance of the Filipino’s pagan past and their acceptance to Christianity.
